DEEPER FAITH • WIDENING OUR WELCOME

Deeper and  Wider

A vision for a new sanctuary and sanctuary courtyard that deepens worship, widens our welcome, and expands ministry for generations to come.

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Deeper and Wider Campaign is our bold, audacious, faithful plan to raise funds to build a new sanctuary with the aims of deepening faith and widening our welcome.

We are being called to go deeper in faith. Worship is at the heart of who we are. This new sanctuary will deepen our worship by incorporating natural light, a connection to the beauty of nature, and everything we need to gather in a fully accessible way. No more hot summer days or cold Christmas Eves. No more peering around columns or struggling to hear the sermon.

Whether we have pews or chairs, the space will be flexible, allowing for creativity and arrangements that are tailored to the needs of the congregation. We will be able to gather for Prayer Around the Cross in our sanctuary and reconfigure the room to make sense for chapel time and VBS worship, so our kids can dance. This new sanctuary is our commitment to excellence in worship for the sake of seeking and sharing the love of God, which changes lives.

This project is also about widening our welcome. In 2014, St. Peter’s hosted the “All Are Welcome” capital campaign to transform an outdated fellowship hall, kitchen, and bathrooms into a space that has enabled remarkable ministry serving our congregation, our neighborhood, and people far and wide. Now it is time to widen that welcome even more by creating a sanctuary that will empower us to exponentially increase our capacity for ministry. We will be able to share our campus with more groups; hosting community concerts, retreat groups, twelve step groups, Interfaith Shelter, weddings, and funerals with gracious hospitality. The space will be genuinely welcoming to people with varying levels of physical ability in ways that our current sanctuary cannot offer.

It is so exciting to be a part of a church that is actively casting nets out into the future to widen God’s welcome and to go deeper in faith! I pray that each one of you would experience the love of God in ways both deeper and wider throughout this campaign and beyond!

Peace

Campaign benchmarks

To make this project a reality we need to achieve the following fundraising benchmarks.

Each of these benchmarks will achieve the following design and construction features.

$1.5M

Three-year commitments received

Basic interior finishes, no organ, no relocated offices, basic landscaping, limited external improvements, and likely a third capital campaign to reduce debt.

Remember: the more we raise through this capital campaign, the more interest we save.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions.

The campaign guide addresses the practical questions behind the vision: why a new sanctuary, how it changes ministry, and how the project would be financed.

Why are we planning to build a whole new sanctuary?

St. Peter’s has discerned a persistent call to build a new sanctuary. The congregation has dreamed of an accessible space without columns or barriers. After a year of discernment, the architects determined that adapting the current sanctuary would be costly and structurally complex, particularly because of the columns, HVAC system, and limits on expanding the existing footprint.

What are the problems with our current sanctuary?

The current sanctuary does not fully reflect St. Peter’s commitment to wide welcome. Barriers, poor lighting and acoustics, limited climate control, fixed seating, and narrow aisles create accessibility challenges. The chancel, choir loft, and sacristy are not wheelchair accessible, and the inflexible space limits activities such as Lenten Prayer Around the Cross, VBS, and Preschool Chapel Time.

How will this new sanctuary impact our capacity for ministry?

The new sanctuary will widen the welcome with a beautiful, open, accessible worship space and improve worship, chapel time, and VBS. Its flexible design and courtyard will also allow St. Peter’s to host multiple ministries at once, including Interfaith Shelter, Twelve Step groups, retreats, Bible studies, small groups, and meetings.

Can we raise the money?

The feasibility study indicates that the congregation is prepared to give generously and that the project is within members’ financial capacity. The council is also exploring parking lot and cell tower revenue and pursuing the John C. Lasko Grant and other available grants.

How will financing work?

Campaign funds will be collected and invested for 1.5 years before taking a construction loan, ideally through Mission Investment Fund or another church lender. Campaign proceeds will reduce the debt and help repay it. If fundraising falls short, project costs will be reduced where possible, with Preschool Surplus and a potential cell tower lease sale identified as additional resources, keeping the loan at no more than $1.6 million.

What about the second capital campaign?

The plan calls for two consecutive three-year capital campaigns. The second, beginning after 2030, would reduce the remaining debt to a level the operating budget could absorb, or potentially pay it off entirely. Funding would come from member gifts, estate gifts, and other creative forms of generosity.
